MUSSELS ABSTRACT AND PURPOSE STATEMENT These data are part of the Southeast Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network (SEAN) and Southwest Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network (SWAN) long-term monitoring program and describe mussel sampling and observations conducted in Southeast Alaska. This dataset consists of six comma separated files (.csv): 1) mussel sampling site layout information, 2) mussel counts for mussels greater than 20 millimeters in a quadrat, 3) mussel size measurements for mussels greater than 20 millimeters in a quadrat, 4) mussel counts for all mussels collected from core samples, 5) mussel size frequencies for all mussels collected from core samples, and 6) list of SEAN and SWAN principal investigators and collaborators. The purpose of this long-term project is to assess change in the density and size distribution of mussels (Mytilus trossulus) in mussel beds. This data also are used as an indicator of mussel prey availability for various predators, including Sea Otters, Black Oystercatchers, sea ducks and sea stars. Sampling was conducted within Sitka National Historical Park. BIVALVES ABSTRACT AND PURPOSE STATEMENT These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program and describe bivalve count and size sampling and observations conducted at intertidal soft-sediment sampling sites in Sitka National Historic Park. The purpose of this long-term project is to assess change in intertidal bivalve communities on mixed sediment beaches. These data are also used to assess changes in abundance, size distribution, and growth rate of larger bivalve species. SEA STAR ABSTRACT AND PURPOSE STATEMENT These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. The dataset has two comma separated values (.csv) file exported from a Microsoft Access relational database. The data consist of: 1) size and disease state of sea stars and 2) counts of sea stars. These data provide sizes, counts, density, and disease state of sea stars at sites in sheltered rocky habitats. These data are used to estimate density of healthy and diseased sea stars and sea star size frequency on sheltered rocky shorelines to assess change in intertidal invertebrate communities on rocky shorelines. INTERTIDAL TEMPERATURE ABSTRACT AND PURPOSE STATEMENT These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program. This dataset consists of date, time, and temperature measurements from intertidal rocky sampling sites, including predicted tide height at the time of the reading, which is used to distinguish air from water temperature readings. The data are provided as comma separated values (.csv) files derived from data downloaded from HOBO temperature loggers. The purpose of this dataset is to document intertidal water and air temperatures at intertidal study sites at Sitka National Historic Park.
