Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Response Areas

Folger K and Flickinger J. 2017. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Response Areas. National Park Service

SEKI Fire Response Areas delineate geographic areas used to support wildland fire initial response planning and incident response within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and adjacent areas. These response areas are delineated by the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Fire Management Officer and cover the parks’ Direct Protection Area (DPA). In California, DPAs identify which federal or state agency has primary responsibility for wildland fire protection and response within a given area. The DPA framework is established through the California Master Cooperative Wildland Fire Management and Stafford Act Response Agreement (CFMA) between participating federal wildland fire agencies and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). The response areas correspond to those identified in the SEKI Fire Run Cards and provide a geographic framework for organizing initial response considerations based on location, access, values at risk, interagency jurisdiction, and available fire-management infrastructure. Individual run cards identify considerations such as primary access routes, developed areas and other values, water sources, helispots, mutual-aid relationships, and recommended resources for differing response levels.
