Lake Clark National Park & Preserve: Paleontological Resource Assessment and Recommendations: Johnson Tract Transportation and Port Site Easements

Lanik A and Tweet J. 2026. Lake Clark National Park & Preserve: Paleontological Resource Assessment and Recommendations: Johnson Tract Transportation and Port Site Easements. National Park Service

National Park Service staff conducted a paleontological resource survey in areas of the Johnson Tract easements of Lake Clark National Park & Preserve in June 2026. This field-based survey was conducted to investigate the geospatial and stratigraphic extent of paleontological resources so potential impacts to these nonrenewable resources could be assessed. Five survey areas were inspected and descriptions of the fossils plus photos of typical examples are included here as reference material for future work. Fossils observed in these Jurassic rocks include marine mollusks (bivalve shells, internal structures of squid-like belemnites, and uncommon ammonite shells) and indeterminate plant material such as wood fragments. Recommendations for protecting and preserving paleontological resources are provided at the end.
