Sierra Nevada Network Lake Basin Characteristics - Processing Script

Serrantes A . 2026. Sierra Nevada Network Lake Basin Characteristics - Processing Script. National Park Service. https://doi.org/10.57830/2321140

Water resources are critical components of Sierra Nevada Network (SIEN) parks’ ecosystems and serve as indicators of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem condition. To assess status and trends of these resources, SIEN conducts long term monitoring of high-elevation lakes throughout Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks using the Sierra Nevada Network Lake Monitoring Protocol. Lake and watershed physical characteristics were originally delineated and analyzed by Andrea Heard as part of the doctoral thesis, "Global Change and Mountain Lakes: Establishing Nutrient Criteria and Critical Loads for Sierra Nevada Lakes." Attributes such as elevation, surface area, shoreline perimeter, slope and percent basin area for land cover, aspect and geologic classes were derived using ArcGIS and are included herein. Lakes that are currently monitored but were added after the creation of this dataset are not represented in the data.
