Teaching Natural Hazards: The Use of Snow Avalanches in Demonstrating and Addressing Geographic Topics and Principles

Butler DR. 1988. Teaching Natural Hazards: The Use of Snow Avalanches in Demonstrating and Addressing Geographic Topics and Principles. The Journal of Geography. 87(6):212-225

The success of the first Geography Awareness Week in 1987 illustrates that teachers and students are indeed interested in differences in human and physical features from place to place. A recent upsurge of interest in the study of natural hazards by geographers (Perry 1985; Powell 1986; Gerrard 1987) provides a focus for the continuation of geography awareness. This paper examines the snow avalanche in the context of the interaction of an environmental process with cognitive processes and human reactions to the environment.
