Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park: Carderock Area - Cultural Landscape Report

University of Pennsylvania, Department of Historic Preservation. 2026. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park: Carderock Area - Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service

The Carderock area of the C&O Canal National Historical Park cultural landscape is significant for its association with the history of transportation, engineering, recreation, conservation, and Black labor history in the United States. This Cultural Landscape Report addresses the historic and existing conditions of each landscape characteristic, building an understanding that much of the landscape today reflects its character and appearance during the periods of significance, which notably include the years of Civilian Conservation Corps-led restoration of the canal (1938-1942) and NPS Mission 66 initiatives (1964-1965), among others. This report recommends rehabilitation as the primary treatment for the cultural landscape, which would allow the area to continue supporting a range of recreational opportunities. The treatment recommendations address physical interventions based on the appropriate treatment approaches, as well as policy/management-related recommendations.
