Notes
Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Low woods in area 1(Beginning of Canal in Georgetown to Chain Bridge, D. C.); fl. Early May. Lea, 2000: Carex emoryi Dewey (Emory's Sedge)Frequent. On rocky, scoured, river bars and frequently flooded channel-shelf woodlands, where it can form extensive stoloniferous colonies, as at Chain Bridge Flats and High Island. Also occurs in an open fresh tidal swamp at Roosevelt Island. Often, relatively few plants in a colony will flower. This species has been considered highly rare in Maryland (Maryland Natural Heritage Program, 1994), but it may be somewhat overlooked. We report here the first records for C. emoryi for Montgomery, Fairfax, and Arlington Counties. Mid-May to late May. 474,1557(US); 1586 (MARY); 1053,1168 (MICH); 1109,1558 (GMUF); l059,1083,llO9,ll67 (Tawes); 1136,1686 (Frost); 1 052 (Aacc). Wiegand, 2001b: * A new occurrence for Emory's sedge (Carex emoryi), listed as a historical plant species in D.C., was reported by C. Lea (Pers. Comm.) during 1999. It is frequent and widely scattered on low scour bars and in frequently flooded woodlands throughout Chain Bridge Flats, both above and below the bridge. Several thousand stems were reported, sometimes forming extensive stoloniferous colonies (Lea & Frye 2000). Suitable habitat for Emory's sedge is abundant in the vicinity, and Lea believes this species has been overlooked so this occurrence would be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 2 sites. A Possibly Extirpated (SH) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also listed in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Documented in the survey area (from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line) during 1999-2000 field surveys., Park Species Data Source: Lea, 2000;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
