Park Species Detail: Witt (1977): Breeding occurs on some offshore islands (Witt 1997), also nests around many of the fresh water ponds and beaver flowages; many nests have been found. Long (1987) A nest with 4 eggs was found in 1969 in a roadside ditch at Seal Cove. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) common spring through fall. Maximum fall count of 25+ between Seawall and Wonderland on 24 September 1971 (W. Russell). Species nests around many of the fresh water ponds and beaver flowages. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Adamus (1983) breeds throughout Maine in scattered locations. Bond (1969) only species of sandpiper that breeds on MDI, frequently seen on the sea coast and about the borders of ponds and lakes. Palmer (1949): Nest building observed on 19 June 1931 on MDI. Bond (19??) common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Nesting on MDI. Sullivan (1937): summer resident; abundant early May to September; nests observed on 14 June 1924, 26 June 1924, and 1 July 1927. Farley (1935) reports 3 pairs of this species on MDI observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Anthony (1933): 5 banded at Great Head between 12 August 1929 and 26 June 1933. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931, less generally distributed; common nester; a "sandpiper" (likely this species) was brooding 4 eggs at Great Head on 9 July 1931 in a nest 2 feet from a roadway and very far from water. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 22 June 1916 and 7 June 1916. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Long (1987): a nest with 4 eggs was reported near a road at Seal Cove in 1969. Eliot (1931): a "sandpiper" (likely this species) was brooding 4 eggs at Great Head on 9 July 1931 in a nest 2 feet from a roadway and very far from water.
