Notes
Park Species Detail: Lea, Chris April, 2000: This species was collected for the first time from Assateague in 1998 and is treated here as in Schubert (1950), who distinguishes it from Desmodium perplexum Schubert. Because of treatments by a number of authors who did not distinguish between these two taxa, the status of D. glabellum in Maryland is uncertain. Though the species is somewhat confluent with D. perplexum in characters, the Assateague specimen seemed well-marked as this taxon. It is considered to be rare (S2) in Delaware (McAvoy, 1998). A single specimen, from which a portion of the plant was collected, was found along the roadside in the State Park, and it is apparently fairly precarious on the island. Though possibly rare in Maryland, it is likely that mainland populations exist. Collections examination and field work in southeastern Maryland may is needed to assess its status. A rank for the Maryland Heritage Biodiversity Conservation Program of SU (SU=Status uncertain, often because of low search effort or cryptic nature of the element)(species is not currently on Maryland lists) is recommended for the species until taxonomic and distribution uncertainties can be resolved./
Lea, Chris (2003):Desmodium glabellum (Michx.) DC. SMOOTH TICK-TREFOIL. Fabaceae. Present on both MD and VA ends. Native. Perennial herb. Jul-Sep. Disturbed area (roadside). Rare. This species is apparently somewhat confluent with Desmodium perplexum Schubert (Schubert 1950) and is poorly known in Maryland (Frye 1997). Desmodium glabellum, may prove to be of conservation concern in Maryland, as its status is poorly known in the state (Frye 1997), and it is considered highly rare in nearby Delaware (McAvoy 2001; McAvoy and Bennett 2001)Collector ID #Lea 858., Park Species Data Source: Lea, Chris (2000)
