Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: A rare grass species, Floating paspalurn (Paspalum fluitans), was documented during late season surveys (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) on scour bars and exposed flood channels. Five previously reported occurrences containing a total of 28 plants were documented. These occurrences were comprised of very small numbers of individuals (4,5,7 & 12) and this species should be considered as one of our rarer native plants. This rare grass is currently reported from only a single other site in Maryland. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Floating paspalum (Paspalurn fluitans), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Twenty-seven plants were counted during a late October visit to the site. The plants were growing in alluvial silt and sand mixed with gravel, cobble and mud This grass is small and low-growing, making accurate survey for the species extremely difficult. Additional potential habitat in the area was not thoroughly searched, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here. R.L. Bartgis reported (1988 field form) more than 100 plants scattered over 1.5 - 2 acres… on muddy and cobbly shores of Potomac. Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. A rare grass species, Fioating paspalum (Paspalumfluitans), was documented during late season surveys on scour-bars and exposed flood channels. Four (4) new and two (2) successful updates for this state endangered plant species were documented. These occurrences were mostly comprised of very small numbers of individuals and this species should be considered as one of our rarer native plants in the gorge.
