Occurrence Notes
An uncommon summer resident in riparian areas along the Colorado River and its perennial tributaries. It is seen most often in cottonwoods and willows, and along the river, it is most often detected below RM 190 (Spence 2006). The species’ range expansion documented by Brown et al. (1985) has continued upstream, with breeding now confirmed above Lees Ferry in Glen Canyon (LaRue et al. 2001). It is almost never seen away from riparian habitats, but a male was near Grand Canyon Village on 18 Dec 1982 (Karen Berggren et al.). Late birds such as this one, and another seen in the Little Colorado River Gorge on 11 Nov 2001 (Charles T. LaRue) are likely of the eastern race (Phillips et al. 1964). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
