Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Rhinichthys atratulus, blacknose dace (resident, native)./
Blacknose dace are distributed from Nova Scotia to Manitoba, south to Mississippi and lower Missouri drainages to Georgia and Alabama. On the Atlantic Coast, they range south from Nova Scotia to South Carolina and Georgia. They are usually found in pools and slow runs of gravelly or rocky streams with high to moderate gradients. Adults, usually attain a standard length of 40-60 mm. Spawning occurs late May through the first week of July in riffles over gravel in water 2-3 inches deep. Nest builcling is accomplished by both the male and female. Fecundity averages 746 eggs. Diet consists of a variety of aquatic insects, worms, amphipods, algae and other plant material. Blacknose dace were collected from Rock Creek during the present study and are relatively abundant./, Park Species Data Source: Britt et al 1993.
