Notes
Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) notes that they have not been found breeding in recent years. Long (1987): Rare and seldom encountered in summer. Nest with eggs found at Seal Cove Pond in late May, and a parent with a brood of young observed on Aunt Betty Pond in early July. Russell (1984?) Hodgdon Pond is a good spot to see this bird. Nesting pairs have been seen on Aunt Betty's Pond, Seal Cove Pond, and almost certainly on Hodgdon Pond. Lists other observations outside of the park. Adamus (1983) breeding in scattered areas throughout Maine; Maine is the northern-most end of breeding range. Favour (1970) reports this species on the 28 December 1969 MDI CBC at Hodgdon Pond by Will Russell. Bond (1969) rare and seldom seen in summer on MDI; nest with 7 eggs found at Seal Cove Pond in late May (no year given) and a parent with brood of young was observed on Aunty Bettys Pond. Long (1951) 2 were seen on Hodgdons Pond in Tremon on 25 April 1950. Palmer (1949) Nest with 7 eggs at Seal Cove Pond on 30 May 1941, observed by Eckstorm. Bond (19??) rare summer resident and fairly common transient on MDI; one or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Pair remained at Aunt Betty's Pond during June 1940, but did not breed. Sullivan (1937): Occasional visitor on inland waters in September and October; less frequent in April and May. Eliot (1931) Not observed on MDI during June or July 1931 but previously reported from the island; the remains of one was found in June 1931, back of Sand Beach. Allen (1899): Uncommon migrant on MDI between 1880 and 1899.
