Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) reports this species in areas adjacent to the park. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Abundant and widespread on MDI. Russell (1984?) Very common spring through fall, irregular in winter usually absent but occasionally common. one of the most abundant breeding birds. Allen (1969): Male observed at Western Point. Bond (1969) abundant and widespread on MDI. Davis (1961): Present in his spruce/fir study plots within the park on MDI between 25 June and 5 July 1959; considered a breeding bird. Bond (19??) common summer resident, a few in winter; 1 or more nests have been found. Long (1953) first nesting record for species on MDI was at Long Pond on 26 June 1950 (G. Harrison); species is fairly well distributed over the island and is a common nesting bird on the western half of MDI. Long (1951) a nest was found at Southwest Harbor on 26 June 1950 (contained 4 eggs); another nest was found at Long Pond (Pond's End) on 30 June 1950. Tyson and Bond (1941): Abundant on MDI. Sullivan (1937) Resident, very common in summer, rare in winter (Pellew). Farley (1935) observed many pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934 and reports that they are more abundant around buildings than in woods.. Anthony (1933): 521 banded at Great Head between 12 August 1929 and 26 June 1933. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931, distributed over whole area, settled or wild. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 15 June 1915 and 1 June 1916.
