Park Species Detail: Checklist information (abundance) updated 4/8/03 by professional judgement of Bruce Connery, ACAD wildlife biologist. Witt (1997) and Long (1987) report this species in areas adjacent to the park. Sharp (1997) Recorded during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996; not sure if species was observed within park boundaries. Long (1987): seldom observed during summer. Russell (1984?) rare spring migrant and breeder; rare fall migrant; the species breeds sparingly, a nest has been found in Somesville and 2 singing males have frequented the burned lands southwest of Bar Harbor; the intersection of the park loop road and the Eagle Lake Road (route 233) has been in the singing territory of one male during 1971-72. Bond (1969) increased as a summer resident on MDI. Long (1953) formerly considered a rare summer visitant on MDI (Bond); now abundant along the brushy roadsides in the Emery District; a male and female were observed near Long Pond during June 1952 (R. Long). Long (1951) 2 singing males were observed at Hulls Cove on 4 July 1950. Palmer (1949) Earliest record is 6 May 1936 at Bar Harbor (Mrs. E.A. Anthony); late date is a female or immature trapped and banded at Great Head in 1939 (see observation); also a male banded on 29 October 1938 and present until 4 November 1938 (Mrs. E.A. Anthony). "It is interesting to note that in over 20 summers in the field, Bond himself did not see this bird until after 1941." Bond (1949): Bond observed this species twice near Bar Harbor. Bond (19??) rare (or possibly occasional) summer resident; nests near Ellsworth on the mainland. Tyson and Bond (1941): probably nests occasionally on MDI; apparently nested in Bliss Field near Bar Harbor in 1935. Sullivan (1937) very rare summer visitor; 2 seen in July 1920 by Tyson (Pellew); mounted specimen taken about 40 years ago in Filliettaz collection; and one banded at Great Head in 1930 (no dates given) by Mrs. J.F. Anthony. Anthony (1933): 1 banded at Great Head between 12 August 1929 and 26 June 1933. Allen (1899): not common on MDI between 1880 and 1899., Park Species Data Source: Russell (1984?); Sullivan (1937); Anthony (1933) Legacy NPSpecies information may no longer be applicable, please remove if it is not applicable. In legacy NPSpecies Residency was Unknown with comment: Long (1987) no nests discovered, but adults observed feeding fledgling at Somesville. Adamus (1983) breeding in southern half of Maine including MDI and the ANP region.
