Notes
Park Species Detail: Cranberry Meadows, 1997: Occasional, Chain Bridge Flats above Arizona Bridge, #1616. Bilton, 1991: (intumescens - ?). BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats: Arizona RR Bridge to Fletchers Boat House, Martha Stauss, Botanist. Pools; +/-60 plants @ 7-8 pools. BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats: Below Fletchers, Warren Steiner, Jil Swearingen. Lea, 2000: Carex grayii Carey (Asa Gray's Sedge)Frequent. In floodplain forests, most frequently on fine-textured (silt loam) soils and in shade. Most plants seen would fit the more southem var. hispidula Gray (see Femald (1950)), a dubious taxon (Mohlenbrock, 1999). In Maryland, C. grayi is generally restricted to floodplain soils along larger streams and is considered a watchlist species (Maryland Natural Heritage Program 1994). We report the species, for the first time, for the District of Columbia and for Arlington County. Late May to mid-July. 1076; 1121,1703 (US); 1149,s.n. (MARY); 1122 (Frost); 1077(Aacc). Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Asa Gray's sedge (Carex grayi), listed as a rare sedge species in D.C., was not successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. It was last reported from Chain Bridge Flats by C. Lea (Pers.Com.) in 1997 North of Chain Bridge. Lea reported the sedge at Four locations on Chain Bridge Flats in floodplain forest from just north of Chain Bridge to just below Arizona Avenue. No specific survey effort to relocate this species at Chain Bridge Flats was made during 1999-2000. However,suitable habitat remains intact in the area so the species likely still occurs here.Status surveys for Asa Gray's sedge are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Found at 0 sites. A Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also listed in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Currently known from other areas in Maryland but not successfully updated at previously reported sites in the survey area from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line during 1999-2000 field surveys.Watch List plant species, not officially listed by the State of Maryland nor by the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Division. Wiegand, 1999: A Watch List species in Maryland, documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line. Wiegand, 1995: Reported during this survey from Sandy Hook west to Cumberland., Park Species Data Source: BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats;Cranberry Meadows, 1997;Bilton, 1991-Ferry Hill;Lea, 2000;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 1995;Wiegand, 2001;
