Park Species Detail: Lea, 2000: Carex hitchcockiana Dewey (Hitchcock's Sedge)Rare. In rich forests, including in mesophytic alluvial terrace forests and dry-mesic upland forests over amplnbolite. Found only at Turkey Run Park and at Turkey Island. This species of calcareous or mafic soils is regarded as highly rare in Maryland (Maryland Natural Heritage Program, 1994). Early May to early June. Vasey s.n. (US); 1941 (GMUF); 759 (Tawes). Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Hitchcock's sedge (Carex hitchcockiana), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. C. Lea (Pers.Com. 1999) reported scattered plants in this area just below Chain Bridge. No additional survey effort to relocate this species at Chain Bridge Flats was made during 1999-2000.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Found at 1 site. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C. Also listed in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) during this survey. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated.
