Notes
Park Species Detail: Lea, Chris April, 2000: This annual sedge, first reported for Maryland on Assateague by Hill (1986) from two small occurrences, is now locally abundant, particularly along the mowed roadside of Oceanside Campground. It seems that maintenance mowing patterns may benefit this species. It apparently occupies varied habitats within its range, ranging from coastal sands to calcareous, montane fens. B. McAvoy (pers. comm.) has seen many more plants in natural swales on the island. It may be a relatively recent colonizer of Assateague that has spread rapidly. The species seems to be of no immediate conservation concern. Surveys for it in natural areas should be conducted to determine the relative importance of colonies apparently maintained or favored by mowing. A rank change to S2 (S2=Very rare; usually between 6 and 20 populations or occurrences; or with many individuals in fewer occurrences; often susceptible to becoming extirpated)is recommended by the Maryland Heritage Biodiversity Conservation Program; this may be lowered further if more extensive colonies are found./ Hill, 1986: Native. Annual. Aug.-Oct. Fresh marsh, apparently tolerant to brackish water. Infrequent, seen at North Beach and N of the State Park, rare in MD overall. First report for MD. MD only./, Park Species Data Source: Lea, Chris (2000)
