Notes
Park Species Detail: BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats: Little Falls & upper Chain Bridge, Allen Belden, VA NHP.Pretty sure that's what it was Prairie Savannah; occasional/common. Mile Post 4 to AZ Ave on flats, woods, riverside, Warren Steiner, Jil Swearingen, Larry Morse; nice, uninvaded floodplain forest., historical record. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Tall dock (Rumex altissimus), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. During the drought of 1999 more than 100 plants were dispersed in small groups across 20 acres of rocky, overwash savanna habitat. During a visit to the site in late May the majority of these contained buds, flowers and early fruit. Small groups of plants were growing in scoured, mucky holes and wbbly depressions. Most of this area is flooded infrequently, perhaps every several years, and is occasionally scoured by ice flows. Suitable habitat for tall dock is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence would be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line) during this survey. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated., Park Species Data Source: BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats;Bartgis, 1993;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
