Occurrence Notes
An uncommon and local summer resident of some ponderosa-oak and pinyon-juniper forests, often in places where the two forest types meet. The Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas found several instances of breeding on the mountains of the Arizona Strip and on Hualapai tribal lands (Wise-Gervais 2005k). While most records are from the western portion of the region, there are increasing records from the South Rim, where, for example, at least three individuals were present at Tusayan Museum in June 2008 (Brian P. Gatlin). Hepatic Tanager has begun a significant expansion of its range over the last 25 years. At the time of the previous checklist, it had been seen in the region only four times (Brown et al. 1985). The timing of its departure in the fall is currently unclear. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
