Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Two (2) new, and seventeen (17) previously reported occurrences for Narrow melicgrass (Melica mutica) were documented from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line. Most of these occurrences contain between 100 and 300 clumps of plants. Total number of plants in the survey area, all within the Potomac Gorge section, is estimated to be around 2,000 clumps. Several of these are dispersed across wide areas and represent some of the largest known occurrences for the species in Maryland. Terrell, 1970: Infrequent to frequent in woods; areas 3 (3 (Lock 10 to Carderock, north parking lot), ),4 [Carderock to Cropley (parking area near Angler’s Inn)], 5 (Bear Island). Fl. Throughout May.Bartgis, 1993: State Threatened plant, in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 1999: Currently listed in Maryland as threatened and documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line. The state-threatened grass Narrow melicgrass (Melica mutica) was observed at scattered floodplain and upland locations along the gorge. Two (2) new, and nine (9) updated, occurrences were documented. Several of these are dispersed across wide areas and represent some of the largest known occurrences for the species in Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;
