Notes
Park Species Detail: The Witch Hole Pond area is considered a good location to observe or hear this species (Witt 1997). Long (1987): currently rare on MDI, although used to be "fairly common"; no recent nesting records. Allen (1969): Present at Western Point based on observations and examination of an owl pellet. Bond (1969) occasionally encountered on woodland trails and mountain slopes; a nest was found in the cavity of a tree on the slope of Cadillac Mountain, a nest was also found south of Western Mountain. Bond (19??) rare resident, much more numerous on the mainland; 1 or more nests have been found (on MDI?). Long (1951a) a nest on Pemetic Mountain contained 4 young on 7 May 1950. Long (1951b) a nest found in a beech forest on the NW slope of Pemetic Mtn contained 3 young. Tyson and Bond (1941): Rare on MDI, one found dead on October 26, 1935. Sullivan (1937): Rare resident. Eliot (1931) Rare in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931.
