Notes
Park Species Detail: Long (1987): Present along the Wonderland trail; generally observed on the western portion of MDI. Russell (1984?) common resident; periodically more numerous. Present in the dense spruce-fir forests. Found during the breeding season in the dense spruce woods near Bass Harbor, Great Heath at Seawall, and on the tip of Western Mountain. Pair observed feeding young at Bass Harbor Light on 20 August (no year given; R. Smart and E. Thompson). The winter of 1961-62 and 1968-69 were notable, 100+ were seen in the southern part of MDI on 18 October 1968 and 100+ were seen moving north from Sand Point on 12 May 1962 (P. Favour). A hand-written note lists "lots moving through" on 10-20 March 1976 (W. Russell). Allen (1969): 2 singing birds observed (presumably singing males on territory) at the Western Point study area. Bond (1969) rare bird of MDI, more common on some smaller nearby islands; most numerous in the southwest part of MDI; broods of young have been observed near Ship Harbor and Indian Point. Bond (19??) rare resident, more numerous in the winter months; juvenile birds have been observed. Long (1951) young observed out of the nest at Seawall on 1 July 1949; 4 seen at Great Heath on 23 August 1950. Tyson and Bond (1941): Rare and local on MDI during summer; found about Indian Point, Pretty Marsh, and Ship Harbor; adults and young observed at Indian Point on July 8-20, 1924. Bond (1937): Breeding within a mile of Ship Harbor. Sullivan (1937): Very rare resident; family of adults and 6 young seen several times at Indian Point on 8-20 July 1924; Observed at Indian Point on 27 June 1937. Eliot (1931) Rare in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; breeding; observed east of Northeast Harbor and south of Somesville. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 4 July 1916 and 3 October 1916. Allen (1899): One observed near Echo Lake on Aug. 23, 1882 by C.W.
