Occurrence Notes
An uncommon permanent resident of mixed conifer forest on the Kaibab Plateau. Brown et al. (1987) referred to the species appearing rarely in winter on the South Rim. While there are no recent winter records, American Three-toed Woodpecker has been seen on the South Rim for the first time in summer and fall. A male was in recently burned ponderosa-oak forest at Hearst Tanks on the South Rim on 23 Jul 2008 (Brian P. Gatlin), another male was seen about three miles south of there in Kaibab National Forest on 15 Jun 2009 (Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory unpubl. data), a female was at Hearst Tanks on 3 Jul 2009 (Brian P. Gatlin), and one more male was also at Hearst Tanks on 29 Sept 2009 (Bill Rozar and Kay Rozar). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011.
