Notes
Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Semotilus atromaculatus, creek chub, (resident, native)./
Creek chub are a medium sized silvery minnow that range throughout most of eastern North America, from Manitoba, Montana, and northern New Mexico east to the Atlantic slope. They are not found on peninsular Florida or the Coastal Plain of the northeastern states. The adults are 102-280 mm total length, 305 mm maximum. Creek chub will eat minnows and other small fish. The normal diet consists of aquatic and terrestrial insects, supplemented by crayfish, worms, and molluscs. The creek chub is found in clear creeks, brooks, and most small streams capable of supporting fish life. Spawning requirements include a gravel bottom for nest building and flowing water. Provided the stream gradient is able to form gravelly areas, this species can tolerate somewhat high turbidities./, Park Species Data Source: Britt et al 1993.
