Park Species Detail: Cranberry Meadows, 1997: Rare, Chain Bridge Flats above tailrace. BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats: Mile Post 4 to AZ Ave on flats, woods, riverside, Warren Steiner, Jil Swearingen, Larry Morse; nice, uninvaded floodplain forest. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Butternut (Juglans cinerea), listed as a highly rare tree species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. It was last reported 6om Chain Bridge Flats by C. Lea (PersComm. 1999) at These sites were revisited during 2000 surveys and butternut was successfully updated. Suitable habitat is abundant in the area so the occurrence may be more extensive than indicated here.Status surveys for this species are recommended to determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Found at 2 sites. A Highly Rare and Federal Candidate Species (HR/C2) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.)
