Notes
Park Species Detail: Loetterle, 1970: characteristic tree species in sunken areas where the water table is near the soil surface, including low ground adjacent to the marshes, swampy areas of the woods and an often flooded meadow./Ingram, 1998: Very common; forests./North, 1984: Common; Low areas, including swamps, bogs, and shores. The National Park Service is concerned that the western end of Pitch and Tar Swamp, the section traversed by the footbridge to the Visitor Center, might be changing in its floristic and vegetational composition. Of particular concern is the presence of Acer rubrum seedlings and saplings within the marsh, perhaps implying that the area is becoming drier or that the water inundating the area is becoming less saline./Hamilton, 2005: See North, 1984 for a discussion of the health of red maple throughout the study area. Core samples indicated the two largest red maples are 15 and 12 years old. The oldest tree was a loblolly pine, age 22 years. These two trees were judged the oldest in the marsh./VanAlstine, 2001: Pond 15, Crawford Road; Pond 44; Pond 46; Pond 47+48; Ponds 55a,b,c; 62; 63./Belden, 1995: A prevalent woody species in forested bottomlands., Park Species Data Source: North, 1984-Jamestown Unit /Jamestown Island/Pitch and Tar Swamp;Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc., 1996-Colonial Parkway/Jamestown Unit/Yorktown Unit; Loetterle, 1970-Jamestown Unit /Jamestown Island;Ingram, 1998-Jamestown Unit/Green Spring ; Salle,1972-Colonial Parkway; Environmental Concern Inc., 2000-Jamestown Unit /NeckOLand; Van Alstine, 2001-Yorktown Unit/Depression Ponds; Chazal, 2001-Jamestown Unit /Jamestown Island;Weber, 2002-Jamestown Unit /Jamestown Island;Clark, 1998-Colonial Parkway/Jamestown Unit/Yorktown Unit;Sankey, No Date-Yorktown Unit/Grafton Ponds Sinkhole Complex,No Date;Belden, 1995-Yorktown Unit/York Creek Drainage; VanAlstine, 2004-Entire Park;Craig, 1991-Yorktown Unit/Surrender Field and Surrender Ground;Rawinski, 1997-Yorktown Unit/Grafton Ponds
