Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Coman (1987; 1981) most frequently seen snake on MDI, found at all elevations. Burnley and Raha (1971) 3 adults were seen on the west shore of Jordan Pond near the Jordan Pond House on 24 August 1971. Manville (1939) considered this species the most common and widespread snake on Mount Desert Island. Found from near sea level to the summits of Cadillac Mountain, Sargent Mountain, Flying Squadron Mountain, and South Bubble Mountain. Manville (1938) 8 specimens listed for MDI, many from within park boundaries; 14 observations listed for MDI. Reiche and Burton (1924) observed or collected in the Oak Meadow region east of Newport (=Champlain) Mountain between 1 July and 8 August, 1924., Park Species Data Source: Connery et al.
