Common migrant, uncommon breeder, occasional in winter (Witt 1997).

Park Species Detail: Connery et al. (1998): Reported this species during searches of watersheds within the park during 1997. Woods (1997): 1179 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 37 days of observations between 2 September and 14 October 1997. Woods (1995): 870 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 31 days of observations between 28 August and 17 October 1995. College of the Atlantic (1988): 575 were observed from Beech Mountain during 27 days of observations between 12 September and 12 October 1988. Major (1987): 961 were observed from Beech Mountain during 75 days of observations between 31 August and 15 November 1987. Major and Mittelhauser (1986): 1317 were observed from Beech Mountain during 76 days of observations between 30 August and 13 November 1986. Long (1987): decreased as a summer resident on MDI; nest with young reported near Eden and fledglings were observed at Seal Cove in 1984. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Uncommon spring migrant, common fall migrant, rare in winter. Maximum spring count was 6 observed near Western Mountain on 23 May 1971 (E. Thompson et al.). While still a common enough migrant, the Sharp-shin has apparently decreased sharply as a breeding bird in the last 30 years (J. Bond 1971) to the point where it can now be considered not to breed at all. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Adamus (1983) Breeding in downeast coastal Maine including the ANP region; scattered breeding throughout the rest of Maine. Baird (1983) recorded from Beech Mountain during the fall of 1980. Bond (1975): Nest found in spruce near Eden. Bond (1969) seldom seen during summer, especially in recent years, but occasionally common during migration in the early fall. Palmer (1949) 2 winter records for Mt. Desert Island (Mrs. E.A. Anthony); occasionally individuals have stayed in the same locality all winter on MDI. "from 1895 or earlier to about 1918, this hawk was the most numerous one in Maine". Bond (19??) rather rare summer resident; common as a transient; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common transient during fall and rare summer resident on MDI; Nesting on Asticou Hill (June 1924) and near Long Pond. Sullivan (1937): Not uncommon summer resident, sometimes abundant in September. Eliot (1931) Rare in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; reported from a roost near the head of Northeast Harbor. Eliot (1931): observed on MDI (at Asticou) by Mr. And Mrs. C.R.
