Park Species Detail: Garman (1991): 386 captures of 211 individuals during trapping in 1987 and 1988 in aspen-birch and red spruce habitats; 3rd most abundant small mammal trapped.
Dubuc et al. (1988) identified this species from scat samples of River Otter.
Coman (1987) present in large numbers on MDI.
Coman (1981) extremely abundant on MDI, found at all elevations. Probably the most numerous mammal in our evergreen forests.
Packie and Nadeau (1975): Trapped within the park on MDI at Hadlock Pond; 13 individuals trapped.
Allen (1969): Present at Western Point; uncommon in study area; 2 individuals captured.
Davis (1961): Trapped within spruce/fir study sites within the park; also 2 immatures are reported.
Calhoun and Arata (1957): trapped on MDI during 1952, exact locations unknown.
Calhoun (1956): trapped on MDI during 1951, exact locations unknown.
Calhoun (1951) trapped on MDI during 1950, exact locations unknown.
Calhoun (1950): Trapped on MDI during November 1949, exact locations unknown.
Manville (1942): nearly as numerous as Peromyscus on the island, found at all elevations including the summit of Cadillac Mountain. Nest with 5 young was found near The Tarn on 28 September 1934 (V. Lunt).
Branin (1939): common on MD (almost as abundant as Peromyscus on MDI); 34 specimens taken; prefer moist wooded habitats; trapped on Cadillac Mountain. Specimens taken at Sieur de Monts Spring, Public Camp Ground, Anemone Cave, Cadillac Mountain summit, woods-meadow east of Champlain Mountain, Seawall, Pretty Marsh, and Ireson Hill.
Johnson (1927) 30 individuals were trapped within the park during 1,473 trap nights between 23 June and 25 August 1924.
