Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Five new occurrences for Valerian (Valeriana pauciflora) were documented (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line). Three of these occur in Frederick County and represent the farthest up river reports for valerian in Maryland. Additionally, eleven previously reported occurrences were successfully updated. Total number of plants in the 16 occurrences is estimated at 5,000. Nearly 75% of these grow in a small area of habitat on Cabin John Island. No plants would be located at four previously known sites for the species. In Maryland, valerian is reported only from these occurrences along the main stem of the Potomac River and at a single site along the Susquehanna River. Terrell, 1970: Scarce; rich woods in areas 2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island), 3 (Lock 10 to Carderock, north parking lot), , May. Plants seen with white flowers. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Found in Montgomery County, Whites Ferry Woods. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;
