Park Species Detail: Terrell, 1970: Shallow water of river in 3 (Lock 10 to Carderock, north parking lot); probably occasional along river. Fl. Begins late May. Cranberry Meadows, 1997: Common, Chain Bridge Flats above Chain Bridge; Common, Chain Bridge Flats below Chain Bridge; Chain Bridge Flats above tailrace. BioBlitz, 1997-Chain Bridge Flats: Mile Post 4 to AZ Ave on flats, woods, riverside, Warren Steiner, Jil Swearingen, Larry Morse; nice, uninvaded floodplain forest, historical record. Wiegand, 2001b: Water-willow (Justicia americana) was seen growing low to the river at several scattered sites within this survey area. It often dominates low, wet scour and deposition bars, and often occurs around the edges of low flood-pools. Water-willow is very common further upriver where it often dominates low, wet habitats. Found in 2 sites.
