Fabre, 2007: Also see Observation linked to Heterodon platyrhinos./Cook and Pinnock, 1989: Once common in nearby Rockaway, the hognose is becoming scarce on Long Island due to habitat loss. Attempts to introduce this snake to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge began in 1984, but have been suspended due to a decline in the Fowler's toad, its major food item./Cook, 1995: Once common on Sandy Hook and Jamaica Bay, was extirpated from these areas most likely due to pesticide use and habitat loss. Attempts to restore species to Breezy Point District appear successful./ Cook and Zuzworsky, 2000: From 1984-1985, 21 hatchlings and 4 adults were released at Ruler' Bar Hassock in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Through 1999, no offspring were noted./ Cook, 2002-Summary status through 1999 of restoration efforts at GATE-Not established at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge; Status uncertain at Breezy Point and Probably established at Sandy Hook./ McArthur-Heuser, 2004:Restored to Sandy Hook/Cook, 2005: Also released at Breezy Point.
