Occurrence Notes
A fairly common summer resident of open, scrubby habitats at moderate elevations throughout the region. It prefers sloping terrain with Great Basin desertscrub or interior chaparral, usually with a scattering of pinyon and juniper. It is an uncommon spring and fall migrant in denser pinyon-juniper woodland and at lower elevations, including along the Colorado River. Spring migrants may be seen through 24 May, while most fall migrants pass in August. Black-chinned Sparrow has undergone a significant range expansion during the last 25 years, as it was considered a rare and local summer resident at the time of the previous checklist (Brown et al. 1985). Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
