Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Four new and four previously reported occurrences for Climbing milkweed (Matelea obliqua) were documented (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line). The largest of these contains 22 plants - the largest reported occurrence for the species in Maryland. Half of the occurrences contain four or fewer plants. Total number of plants counted in the eight occurrences is 69 plants. This species is not currently reported in Maryland away from the vicinity of the Potomac River and a few of its tributaries. Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered extirpated plant, in Potomac Fall-Line. Wieband, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Climbing milkweed (Matelea obliqua), listed as extirpated from D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Four flowering vines were growing in well drained sandy substrate between rocks and flood debris .The plants were tightly grouped in a 2x3 meter area of infrequently flooded habitat.. . .During this survey, climbing milkweed was reported at several sites in the Potomac Gorge where it had not been seen for many years, as well as at several new locations. Although most of these were small occurrences, field observations suggest climbing milkweed was more prolific than normal during 2000. Suitable habitat is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for climbing miheed are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Presumed Extirpated (SX) plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Wiegand, 1995: One new occurrence, one updated occurrence documented in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland. Hamilton, 2007: See Gonolobus obliquus, Vincetoxicum obliquum, synonyms., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;Wiegand, 1995
