Park Species Detail: Woods (1997): 202 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 37 days of observations between 2 September and 14 October 1997. Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Woods (1995): 494 were observed from Cadillac Mountain during 31 days of observations between 28 August and 17 October 1995. College of the Atlantic (1988): 404 were observed from Beech Mountain during 27 days of observations between 12 September and 12 October 1988. Long (1987): Most common hawk on MDI. Major (1987): 643 were observed from Beech Mountain during 75 days of observations between 31 August and 15 November 1987. Major and Mittelhauser (1986): individuals were observed from Beech Mountain during 76 days of observations between 30 August and 13 November 1986. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) Uncommon spring migrant and breeder, common to very common fall migrant. Notes an extreme date of 1 bird observed at Otter Point on 30 September 1972 (W. Russell). Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Baird (1983) recorded from Beech Mountain during the fall of 1980. Bond (1969) commonest hawk on MDI, often seen by the roadsides. Palmer (1949) June 12 is a date for eggs on MDI (Tyson and Bond). Bond (19??) fairly common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common summer resident of MDI. Sullivan (1937): common summer resident, April - October; nesting records in 1932 and 1934. Farley (1935) reports 1 pair on Mount Desert Island between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931) Rare in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931; formerly a common breeder on MDI; observed at the Sargent Amphitheatre; also observed circling above Southwest Harbor on 2 July 1931.
