Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Coville's phacelia (Phacelia covillei) was found to be a fairly common and even aggressive plant species in rich floodplain forests and adjacent slopes throughout the Potomac Gorge during April and May. Four new and 28 previously reported occurrences were documented (from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line). Five of the occurrences were estimated to contain several thousand plants each, and were scattered over large areas of habitat. Total population for all the occurrences in the Potomac Gorge is estimated to exceed 15,000 individuals. Most of the known Maryland sites for this easily overlooked, low-growing species occur in the Potomac Gorge. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Coville's phacelia (Phacelia covillei), listed as a rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. Fifty to 100 plants were growing in rich sandy substrate in upper terrace floodplain forest habitat. The plants were scattered across an acre of infrequently flooded habitat.Suitable habitat for Coville's phacelia is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence would be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Wiegand, 2001b: Found in Fletchers Floodplain Survey Site. Found at 3 sites. A Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;
