Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Rhinichthys cataractae, longnose dace (resident, native)The longnose dace are distributed from coast to coast in north central America, across Canada. In the western basin they occur south to northern Mexico west to Arizona. In the Mississippi drainage they are found south to Iowa, and in the east south along the Appalachian mountains. They are generally considered to be bottom dwellers found in swiftly flowing streams over gravel beds and riffle habitats. Their diet generally consists of insect larvae, primarily chironomid larvae. The adult size is about 75 .mm (fL) with a maximum of 125 mm (TL). Spawning is thought to begin in May and may continue into August. They do not build nests, but establish territories which are sometimes associated with other nests of different species, resulting in hybrids. One parent generally guards the territory. The female lays 200-1,200 transparent, adhesive eggs that hatch in 7-10 days in ambient water of about 59 of.
