Notes
Park Species Detail: Higgins et al. 1998: Surveyed flying squirrel populations on Mount Desert Island during the summer of 1992; only northern flying squirrels were trapped. In the mixed conifer-hardwood stands, flying squirrels were captured at locations with larger deciduous trees.
Sawdy (1997) 1 captured in a trap at Indian Point between 21 April and 28 May 1997.
Garman (1991): 28 captures of 21 individuals during trapping in 1987 and 1988 in aspen-birch and red spruce habitats
Coman (1987, 1981): Present on Mount Desert Island in "gratifying numbers".
Allen (1969): Present at Western Point; 3 individuals captured.
Davis (1961): One Northern Flying Squirrel was captured in a trap within the park at the Beech Hill Spruce/fir stand, but the abundance of this species was unknown.
Calhoun (1951) trapped on MDI during 1950, exact locations unknown.
Calhoun (1950): Trapped on MDI during November 1949, exact locations unknown.
Manville (1942): Common and widespread on MDI, known from sea level to Cadillac Mountain summit; a nest occupied by 4 flying squirrels was observed south of The Tarn on 19 December 1934 (Stupka).
Branin (1939): Two northern flying squirrels were captured in snap traps near the Jackson Memorial Laboratory (in Hulls Cove then? GHM)., Park Species Data Source: Higgins et al. (1998); Garman (1991); Allen (1969); Davis (1961); Manville (1942)
