Notes
Park Species Detail: Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): Present around the edges of Big Heath opposite the Wonderland parking area; locally common on the western side of MDI; Nests have been reported although no specific details are given. Russell (1984?) common spring through fall; The Big Heath at Seawall supports a large population, can also be seen equally well from the trails on the west and south sides of Beech Mountain and in boggy portions of spruce-fir forests all over MDI. In the fall, Otter Point, Bass Harbor Light, and Ship Harbor are good places to see this species. Duley and North (1984) observed at Jordan Cliffs between May and September 1984. Bond (1969) seldom seen on MDI in comparison to the other Empidonax flycathers (willow flycatcher and least flycatcher); not uncommon in swampy woodlands; found along the fire road between the southern end of Long Pond and Seal Cove Pond, and along the Hio Fire Road between Seawall and Bass Harbor Marsh; nest was discovered on the edge of the bog near Ship Harbor. Long (1953) formerly considered local on MDI, now well distributed on the western half of MDI; found in most cedar swamps and along the borders of heaths and bogs. Long (1951) seen in several swamps during the 1949-1951 breeding seasons. Palmer (1949) 3 eggs in advanced incubation were found on 3 July 1941 at Seawall Bog. Bond (19??) common summer resident; 1 or more nests have been found. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common in the wilder parts of MDI. Sullivan (1937): Rare summer resident May to September (Pellew). Farley (1935) reported 10 pairs on MDI, observed between 12 June and 22 June 1934. Eliot (1931): Common in the Northeast Harbor area during June 1931, less generally distributed; 4 observed on Sargent Mountain. Now breeding at the spring on Sargent Ridge, south of Lower Hadlock Pond, and on Little Harbor Brook. Also observed on MDI by Mr. And Mrs. C.R. Robbins on 9 June 1916. Allen (1899): not very common on MDI between 1880 and 1899., Park Species Data Source: Witt (1997); Sharp (1997); Long (1987); Russell (1984?); Duley and North (1984); Bond (1969); Palmer (1949); Farley (1935); Eliot (1931)
