Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Four (4) new occurrences for White trout lily (Etythronium albidum) were reported during this survey from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia. Another twenty-two (22) previously reported occwences were successfully updated. This highly clonal species commonly grows in dense groups containing between 100 - 1,000 leaves. Four of the occurrences were estimated to contain multiple thousands of leaves. Total number of leaves seen in the survey area during 1999-2000 field surveys was estimated to exceed 30,000. Approximately half of these occur at the Catoctin Station site in Frederick County. White trout lily generally has a more western distribution and most occurrences in Maryland grow in floodplain habitats along the Potomac River. The sites in the Potomac Gorge are among the eastern most occurrences. Eight (8) sites for white trout lily in the survey area were not successfully updated. Terrell, 1970: Scarce in woo Areas 2 (2 (Chain Bridge to Lock 10 parking area opposite Plummer's Island)), 3 (3 (Lock 10 to Carderock, north parking lot), ). Fl. Early-mid April. Bartgis, 1993: Found in Frederick County, Catoctin Station: Several major populations of white trout lily occur in this area. It is listed by Maryland as a Threatened species. About half of all the individuals known in the State occur in the Catoctin Station area, making this the most significant concentration for the species in Maryland. One Erythronium population is slowly being ovenun by a clonal patch of the alien English-ivy. Found in Frederick County, Nolands Ferry. Found in Potomac Fall-Line. Montgomery County, Sycamore Landing, Hunting Quarter - largest known population of white trout lily in mid-Atlantic states. Found in Washington County, Fort Duncan North. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for White trout lily (Eryfhronium albidurn), listed as a rare plant species in D.C., was successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. More than 100 leaves and two flowering plants were growing in rich alluvial sand in a maturing floodplain forest Suitable habitat for white trout lily is abundant in the vicinity, so this occurrence could be more extensive than reported here.Status surveys for this species are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats Survey Site. Found at 1 site. A Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C.) Also a listed species in Maryland. Wiegand, 1999: Currently listed in Maryland as threatened and documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line. Four (4) new, albeit small, occurrences for White trout lily (Erythronium albidum) were reported during this survey, mostly on little-visited islands in the river. This species is currently known in Maryland only from along the Potomac River and the groups here in the gorge represent some of the most eastern occurrences for this otherwise mid-western species. Eight (8) previously reported sites for this species in the gorge were successfully updated. Wiegand, 1995: Two new occurrences, three updated occurrences, (one unconfirmed occurrence) documented in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Terrell, 1970;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 2001b;Wiegand, 1995;
