Species is generally found at more offshore locations (Witt 1997).
Russell (1984?) very common to abundant in spring, abundant to very abundant fall migrant. Occurs rarely within 30 miles of shore. A flock of 10 were observed near Otter Point in a storm on 25 April 1968 and 2 were observed near Seal Harbor on 28 December 1969 (R. Craney). A partly oiled bird was found on Sand Beach on 31 October 1973 (K. Darling and W. Russell) and a hand-written note reports one at the mouth of Northeast Harbor on 23 June 1975 (W. Townsend).
Favour (1970) reports this species on the 28 December 1969 MDI CBC; 2 were seen by Ruth Craney and Bunny Peters swimming close to the rocky Seal Harbor shoreline.
Palmer (1949) 1 shot by A. Norton off Great Head on 1 May 1923.
Bond (19??) Rare transient, usually found well out to sea.
Tyson and Bond (1941): One taken off Great Head on May 1, 1923.
