Park Species Detail: Witt (1997) Reports this species in areas adjacent to the park. [No confirmed records within the park boundary to date; GHM]. Russell (1984?) Uncommon spring and fall migrant, uncommon winter resident, rare but locally regular in summer. Lists many observations outside of park. Bond (19??) transient and winter resident on MDI; occasionally seen in summer; less numerous than the common loon. Sullivan (1937): 6 observed during the CBC on MDI on 23 December 1937. Eliot (1931) Observed on Mount Desert Island during June 1931; Immature observed; also a "freak" bird "with diminutive, useless wings, blue beak, brown upperparts sparsely white-spotted, gray cheeks and chin, white underparts, and an incredible appendage like a third leg or naked elongation of the spine curled forward over its tail, with wide, flat tip resting in the feathers on the right side of the rump, whick it wags like a dog." seen in June in Western Way and in July at Elliot Beach.
