Notes
Park Species Detail: Wiegand, 2001: Ten (10) previously reported occurrences for Shumard's oak (Quercus shumardii) were successfully updated during this survey (from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line. A total of nearly 200 mature trees were counted in these occurrences during 1999-2000 field surveys. The groups varied widely is number of Shumard's oak from as few as 2 to as many as 60 trees. The species appears to have its greatest concentration in Maryland in the Potomac Gorge, in the area around Great Falls, and on the islands around Cabin John Island. All reported extant populations for this rare tree in Maryland occur along the Potomac River. Bartgis, 1993: A single tree of shumardii has been noted in the area (Catoctin Station, Frederick County), growing on the side of the towpath. This tree is difficult to survey for because of its similarity to other species that are more common on the Canal. It is considered to be very rare in the state by the Maryland Natural Heritage Program. Found in Frederick County, Nolands Ferry. State rare plant, in Potomac Fall-Line. Montgomery County, Sycamore Landing, Hunting Quarter - largest known population of Shumard's oak in mid-Atlantic states. Also found in Washington County, Dam Number Four Cave, Dellingers Spring Ferry Hill, Fort Duncan and Dargan Bend Woods. Wiegand, 1999: Currently listed in Maryland as threatened and documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line. Wiegand, 1995: One new occurrence, five updated occurrences , (one unconfirmed occurrence) documented in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 1995;
