Notes
Park Species Detail: Killip, 1953: C. hirtifolia Mackenzie was recorded as C. hirtiflora in 1935 list in error. Maxon, 1935: Rare. Lea, 2000: Carex hirtifolia Mackenzie (Pubescent Sedge)Infrequent. In rich bedrock terrace and mesopbytic alluvial terrace forests. Turkey Run Park, Great Falls Park, Virginia, Bear and High Islands, ravine of Cabin John Creek. This species has been listed as highly rare in Maryland (Maryland Natural Heritage Program, 1994), but is now known to be more frequent in the state. It is considered a watchlist species inVirginia (Killeffer, 1999). This is the first report of C. hirtifolia for Fairfax County. Early May to mid-June. 1447,1459 (US); 1462 (GMUF); 731,1027 (Tawes); I559(Grfa); 884 (Aacc). Bartgis, 1993: State Endangered plant, found in Potomac Fall-Line. Wiegand, 2001b: A previously reported occurrence for Pubescent sedge (Carex hirtifolia), listed as a highly rare plant species in D.C., was not successfully updated during 1999-2000 field surveys. It was last reported from the Chain Bridge Flats area by W.R Maxon when he collected it in 1916 at C&O Canal near Little Falls Brook. It has not been collected or reported from this area since that time, 85 years ago. No specific survey effort to relocate this species at Chain Bridge Flats was made during 1999-2000. However, suitable habitat remains intact in the area so the species may still occur here.Status surveys for pubescent sedge are highly recommended to fully determine its current status at Chain Bridge Flats. Found at 0 sites. A Highly Rare plant species known to occur within the District of Columbia portion of LOCO (along the C&O Canal NHP and Potomac River from the Maryland line to Key Bridge, Washington, D.C. Also listed in Maryland. Wiegand, 2001: Documented from Maryland during this survey from Sandy Hook, Maryland, to District of Columbia line. Wiegand, 1999: A Watch List species in Maryland, documented to occur in the gorge during this survey from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia line., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Lea, 2000;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001
