Notes
Park Species Detail: Britt, 1993: Dorosoma cepedianum, gizzard shad (resident,) The gizzard shad has a distribution ranging from the,Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River to southeastern South Dakota and central Minnesota, south across New Mexico, east to the Gulf of Mexico and throughout the Mississippi and Great Lakes drainages to about 400N latitude on the Atlantic coast./Gizzard shad prefer inland lakes, ponds, and warm water streams with high phytoplankton production. They are often found in brackish water, but tend to avoid streams with very high gradients and a lack of large pools. Some riverine populations undergo spawning migrations within the river system, but the gizzard shad is not considered a migratory species. Spawning begins with a rise in water temperature in March or April and continues through June. Gizzard shad live about 6 years and are abdundant in Rock Creek. They are found throughout the year in the tidal portions of the Potomac River./, Park Species Data Source: Britt 1993
