The local breeding population belongs to the threatened sub-species the Mexican Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis lucida). USFWS 2012. An uncommon permanent resident of rocky canyons and cliff ledges in the Redwall and Muav Limestone layers and the pinyon-juniper woodlands above them.
