Occurrence Notes
An uncommon and local summer breeding resident of grasslands on the Coconino Plateau and on the Arizona Strip. Elsewhere in the region it is a rare spring and fall migrant. Surprisingly, there is only one reported winter record, a dark-morph adult photographed at Valle, 2 Dec 2008 (Brian P. Gatlin, Madeline C. Tighe). It has likely been overlooked, as Monson and Phillips (1981) reported it more common in winter than in other seasons in northern Arizona, and LaRue (in prep) considers it an uncommon permanent resident of the nearby Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations, with more birds present in winter. In the Grand Canyon region, it is probably a rare to uncommon winter resident of the same open habitats where it breeds. Data source: Gatlin, BP. 2011. Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the Grand Canyon Region. 3rd edition.
