Notes
Park Species Detail: Bartgis, 1993: Found in Potomac Fall-Line; one of several plants considered to be rare throughout their range and are under review for potential federal listing. State Threatened plant. Wiegand, 2001: Former candidate for federal listing that was reported during 1999-2000 surveys from Sandy Hook, Maryland to District of Columbia line. A new occurrence for the state endangered Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita) was documented during 1999-2000 field surveys. Several clumps containing 13 stems were growing near the edge of the river in the Little Falls area. A previously known site in the Cropley area containing several hundred flowering stems was successfully updated. This occurrence is the largest population for Virginia mallow in Maryland. Another previously known site at Plummers Island was successfully updated during 1999 - for the first time at this site since 1939. Several additional previously reported occurrences for Virginia mallow in the survey area were not successfully updated, despite intensive searching of the appropriate areas. Virginia mallow is rare enough to be of importance on a wider regional basis, and was formerly considered as a federal candidate species for listing by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Wiegand, 1999: Plant species documented in the survey area (from Great Falls, Maryland, downriver to the District of Columbia) during this survey. Currently listed in Maryland as endangered or endangered/extirpated. Wiegand, 1995: A few stems of the state-endangered Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita) were observed during 1994 surveys on the scourbar at the mouth of Licking Creek. It was not relocated during surveys in 1995. This is the first report for the species in Washington County. It is currently known to be extant at only a few sites in Maryland. All but one of these occur along the Potomac River. One new occurrence documented in the survey area from Sandy Hook West to Cumberland, Maryland., Park Species Data Source: Bartgis, 1993;Boone, 1986;Maxon, 1935;TNC, 1999;Thomas, 1969;Wiegand, 1999;Wiegand, 2001;Wiegand, 1995
