Park Species Detail: Sharp (1997) Recorded from within park boundaries during the Breeding Bird Survey conducted June 1996. Long (1987): not present every summer on MDI, but occasionally plentiful. Breeding on MDI, but few details given. North and Chidester (1986) Observed from Jordan Cliffs between July and September 1986. Russell (1984?) very common to abundant spring and fall migrant; very common breeder; variable (usually uncommon) in winter; during the last decade, this species has becomea very common breeder in the spruce-fir forests. Allen (1969): Present at Western Point. Bond (1969) may not summer on MDI every year; favorable locations include Asticou, Seal Harbor, and the vicinity of Ship Harbor. Palmer (1949) young out of the nest were seen being fed on 11 June (year?) on MDI; also from March to April 1939, several hundred were reported on MDI and many died during severe weather at that time (Mrs. E.A. Anthony). Bond (19??) resident, but subject to wandering; sometimes common in the nesting season, but in some years very rare; juvenile birds have been observed. Tyson and Bond (1941): Common on MDI; frequently observed at Asticou and Southwest Harbor. Sullivan (1937) not uncommon resident; nests in April; often seen in August in flocks. Farley (1935) observed adult feeding young near the ANP office in Bar Harbor on 13 June 1934. Eliot (1931) Observed on Mount Desert Island during June & July 1931; one feeding 2 young at Seal Harbor on 4 July 1931; also a flock of 8 or 10 at Somesville on 12 July 1931.
